Overview
We’re delighted to have completed the remodelling and refurbishment of a mid-19th century coach house on the Cator Estate in Blackheath, working within the sensitive setting of the Blackheath Park Conservation Area.
The project involved the full transformation of a previous 1950s conversion, delivering a contemporary, high-performance home while respecting the character of the original building.
Key elements of the scheme included:
- Complete replacement roof structure with natural slate covering
- Rear extension incorporating zinc standing seam construction
- Installation of high-performance windows, with architectural adjustments to the street-facing elevation to improve outlook
- Installation of MVHR ventilation, air source heat pump, and photovoltaics
- Delivery to strict airtightness targets using Passivhaus principles
overview
The interior design and detailing were particularly well considered. Exposed glulam beams, a striking feature spinal wall, and a carefully crafted oak staircase anchor the internal architecture.
The use of Portland stone flooring, selected across different beds and shell contents, creates subtle but distinctive variation throughout the space, complemented by a bespoke joinery package that ties the architectural and interior design together.
Achieving these standards required careful detailing and very tight construction tolerances throughout.
