193 FLEET STREET
193 FLEET STREET, LONDON, EC4
Client: City of London
Consultant: City Surveyor’s Department
Contract Value: £56k
Summary of works: External refurbishment and sympathetic restoration and re-decoration of a Victorian office building
Description of works:
193 Fleet Street is a Victorian office building with ground floor plus 4 no. floors above. The project required full redecoration of all previously painted surfaces, and building fabric repairs.
The repairs took the form of metalwork repairs to the ornamental balustrades at roof level, bird fouling removal and brick pointing repairs to the rear lightwell, and a thorough stone clean to the front elevation.
The specialist stone repair and cleaning was especially sensitive to this building as the construction material is Red Mansfield sandstone. Much sought after for decorative building works, it was extensively quarried and is now no longer available. Conservation work relies on the substitution of other (non-dolomitic) red sandstones, and stone mixes.
